The Gabrieli Choir is delighted to be returning to the beautiful St. Michael’s Church in the heart of Budapest for its next, very special concert.  The main work on the programme will be the first ever performance in Hungary of the Mass in Blue, a complete jazz mass for choir, soprano soloist and jazz trio written in 2003 by the young British composer Will Todd. Described as “a brilliant blend of driving jazz grooves and clear, strong choral writing against which the solo piano and solo soprano voice weave and blend in a delightful aural tapestry”, we feel sure this work cannot fail to leave an impression! The choir will be directed in this première by its Artistic Director Richard Sólyom, and will be joined by the János Nagy Trio and soprano Tímea Balogh.

The rest of the concert will feature a varied programme of shorter a cappella and accompanied sacred motets from the 20th and 21st centuries.   The composers of these will include Herbert Howells (one of the most significant figures in English Cathedral music), Paul Mealor (whose exquisite new work Ubi Caritas was performed so movingly in the Royal Wedding at Westminster Abbey in April 2011, and will receive its first performance in Hungary in this concert), and the late David Fanshawe (composer of the extraordinary African Sanctus).  Here the choir will be accompanied on the organ by László Gesztesi-Tóth.

In full, our programme will consist of the following works:

  • Herbert Howells, Magnificat in B minor
  • Jonathan Dove, Seek Him That Maketh The Seven Stars
  • Noel Rawsthorne, Like As The Hart
  • Gabriel Jackson, Song
  • Moses Hogan, Elijah Rock
Organ interlude: Ronald Watson, Toccata
  • Michael Praetorius/Jan Sändstrom, Det Är En Ros Utsprungen
  • Eric Whitacre, Lux Aurumque
  • Herbert Howells, Nunc Dimittis in B minor
  • Will Todd, Mass in Blue
  • David Fanshawe, The Lord’s Prayer
An exciting evening’s music is undoubtedly in store! Tickets will cost 2,900 Ft (Students: 300 Ft), and will be available both at the door and through Concert and Media outlets.
