The Gabrieli Choir

Our forthcoming concerts

Saturday 7th July, 2007, 3.0 p.m.
Roman Catholic Church, Magyar u. 13, Zsámbék

The Gabrieli Choir is delighted to be taking part in this concert, part of Hungarian Radio’s “Classical and Jazz” series.  In the first half of the concert the Gabrieli Choir, conducted by Richárd Sólyom, will be performing James Whitbourn’s Son of God Mass.  This is a bold new setting of the Latin Mass from a talented young English composer, scored for choir, organ and soprano saxophone.  The organ will be played by László Gesztesi-Tóth and the saxophone soloist will be Kristóf Bacsó.  The same performers were privileged to give the Hungarian première of this work in the presence of the composer in the Gabrieli Choir’s highly successful Christmas Concert in Saint Stephen’s Basilica in December 2006.

After the interval Kristóf Bacsó (saxophone) and Mátyás Szandai (bass) will be play their own jazz improvisations.

Admission to the Zsámbék concert is free, but, as it will be broadcast live on Bartók Rádió, members of the audience are kindly asked to take their seats by 2.45 p.m. at the latest.

Sunday 15th July, 2007, 7.0 p.m.
Ják Chapel, Budapest City Park

The setting for this concert is the Ják Chapel, idyllically situated on the island in Budapest’s City Park.  The programme, conducted by Richárd Sólyom, is made up of English sacred music from the 16th to the 21st centuries, and features works by Whyte, Purcell, Handel, Parry, Howells and Rutter.  The Chapel’s new Phoenix digital organ will be played by László Gesztesi-Tóth.  Admission is free but donations will be gratefully accepted.

Sunday 29th July, 2007, 6.0 p.m.
Roman Catholic Church, Vigántpetend

Following the success of the concert given at last year’s Művészetek Völgye Festival, the Gabrieli Choir is thrilled to have been invited back to perform at this year’s event.  The main work in the programme will be James Whitbourn’s Son of God Mass.  This is a bold new setting of the Latin Mass from a talented young English composer, scored for choir, organ and soprano saxophone.  László Gesztesi-Tóth will play the new Phoenix digital organ, on loan from the Ják Chapel, Budapest, and the saxophone soloist will be Kristóf Bacsó.  (The same performers were privileged to give the Hungarian première of this work in the presence of the composer in Saint Stephen’s Basilica in December 2006.)  Also on the programme will be motets and anthems by Handel, Parry and Mathias.  Admission is by one-, three- or ten-day Season Ticket (i.e., a ticket valid for all Festival events on the given day or days).

2007-2008 Season and Beyond

Planning is well under way for concerts in the 2007-08 season.  The Christmas concerts for example will feature the Four Christmas Motets by Poulenc, as well as pieces by Howells, Whitacre and Rutter.  Other items in the pipeline include Tippett, Byrd and more Howells, the first performance of new works written specially for the Gabrieli Choir by Miklós Kocsár and Alan Sutton, as well as Hungarian premières of important works by Jaakko Mäntyjärvi and Will Todd.  Full details will be posted on the website in due course, so please do visit again in the future.
