The Gabrieli Choir
Concerts in September to December, 2008
Concert
Sunday 28th September, 2008 – 7.30 p.m.
Church of the Holy Spirit, Herminamező
Budapest XIV., Kassai tér 2
(5 minutes’ walk from the Mexikói út terminus of the No. 1 (Yellow) Underground line)
This concert features a selection of English sacred music from the 16th to the 20th centuries. The composers whose works are featured (Thomas Tallis, Henry Purcell, Sir Charles Villiers Stanford and Herbert Howells) have been chosen for the collective glimpse they offer into the enormous variety to be found within the Anglican cathedral repertoire. The Gabrieli Choir will be conducted by Richárd Sólyom, and the organ will be played by László Gesztesi-Tóth. Full details of the pieces and background notes about the composers will be provided in the comprehensive programme booklet, available free at the door. The concert lasts one hour, and although there is no charge for admission, donations will be gratefully accepted. These will be directed exclusively towards the cost of the choir’s 2009 tour to England.

Choral Evensong
Sunday 16th November, 2008 – 4.0 p.m.
Lutheran Church
Budapest I., Bécsi kapu tér
(16/16A/116 buses from Moszkva tér)
The Gabrieli Choir is delighted to be joining Budapest’s resident Anglican congregation for a celebration of the feast day of their patronal saint, St. Margaret. (Margaret was born in Hungary and became Queen of Scotland in 1070.) Choral Evensong follows the words of the Book of Common Prayer (published 1662), and, in common with the Anglican practice worldwide, the service will include music from several centuries. The anthem will be Henry Purcell’s glorious Rejoice in the Lord, Alway, from the 17th century; there will also be well-loved hymns from the 19th century; and there will be two works receiving their first performance: a new setting of the Responses by Alan Sutton, and the Nunc Dimittis composed specially for the Gabrieli Choir by Miklós Kocsár. The service, which will be led (in English) by the Rev. Canon Denis Moss, Anglican Chaplain for Budapest, will last approximately one hour, and all will be most welcome. There is no charge for admission.
Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols
Friday 12th December, 2008 – 6.0 p.m.
Saint Columba’s Scottish Presbyterian Church
Budapest VI., Vörösmarty u. 51
(No. 1 (Yellow) Underground to Vörösmarty utca)
This is another collaboration with Budapest’s resident Anglican community. The Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols is a much loved prelude to Christmas, combining the Christmas Story, as told in nine short readings from the Bible, with specially chosen carols and seasonal hymns, most familiar, though some less so. The musical items (by Orlando Gibbons, William Mathias and John Rutter, to mention just three) will be sung by the Gabrieli Choir, conducted by Richárd Sólyom, and the Exsultate Boys’ Choir, from the Zoltán Kodály Hungarian Choir School of Budapest, conducted by Márton Tóth. The service, which will be led (in English) by the Rev. Aaron Stevens, Minister of the Scottish Presbyterian Church in Budapest, will last approximately one hour and all will be most welcome. There is no charge for admission.
