The Gabrieli Choir

Would you like to sing in a choir that specialises in English sacred music?

The Gabrieli Choir is the only choir in Hungary to specialise in the study and performance of Anglican cathedral music. It rehearses weekly (Sunday evenings, from 5 to 8 pm) at the Central European University in Budapest’s 5th district, and gives concerts in some of Budapest’s finest churches, including St Stephen’s Basilica, the Belvárosi Szent Mihály Templom and the Mátyás Templom. The choir’s Musical Director is Richárd Sólyom.

Its core repertoire comprises English/Anglican music from the 16th century right up to the present day (for example: Tallis and Byrd; Purcell and Handel; Parry and Stanford; Bairstow and Howells; Taverner and Rutter). Much as in England, older works are often juxtaposed with modern ones, and similarly Anglo-Saxon with European music (e.g. Bach, Fauré, Kodály, and Poulenc, to name but a few composers). Concert programmes are consistently arranged within the overall context of the Anglican tradition.

Besides championing such music, the choir has also recently achieved notable successes by working closely with other choirs and ensembles: 2011, for example, witnessed several productive partnerships with the Princeton University Chapel Choir from the USA, and the Lux Aeterna Bach Consort, Nagy János jazz trio and Gemma Choir from Budapest. So this is definitely an exciting choir to belong to!

If you are an experienced singer, can sight-read well, and feel you would enjoy studying and performing this repertoire, we would be happy to hear from you.
